What is the engagement process?

When an employer is "put on notice," that an accommodation may be needed to address a medical condition, this triggers the need for engagement between the employee-employer.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has recommended that employers use an “interactive process,” which signifies that employers and employees with disabilities who request accommodations work together to come up accommodation solutions.

This process is intended as a good faith interaction between the parties – a back and forth of questions and information sharing relating to the limitations and capabilities of the employee, which also includes the needs and constraints of the employer, as well as all possibilities to make it all work.
